If you’re planning a wedding in Calgary, one of the first questions that comes up is:

“How much does a wedding DJ cost?”

The short answer:

Most wedding DJs in Calgary range from $1,200 to $2,500+

But that number on its own doesn’t tell you much — and it’s where a lot of couples make the wrong call.

The real answer depends on a few key factors, and understanding those will help you make the right decision for your day.

When it comes to your wedding budget, the DJ is often one of the smaller investments — but it has one of the biggest impacts on how the day actually feels.

Average Wedding DJ Cost in Calgary

Here’s a realistic breakdown of what couples typically spend:

Budget DJs — $800 to $1,200

  • Usually newer or part-time DJs

  • Basic equipment, usually not a clean setup

  • Limited planning support

  • Less experience reading crowds

  • May have little or no real wedding footage or reviews

In many cases, you’re relying on limited proof — it can feel a bit like a blind date.

Mid-Range DJs — $1,200 to $1,600

  • May have solid experience

  • Usually better equipment

  • Some planning and coordination

  • A mix of reviews and past work

  • May have some photos and videos showing the vibe

There are some great DJs in this range, but you need to do your research.

Premium DJs — $1,600 to $2,500+

  • Experienced, consistent performers

  • Strong crowd reading and timing

  • Full-day coordination and support

  • Clear proof of work:

    • Real wedding videos

    • Strong Google reviews

    • Consistent photos and videos of healthy dance floors

    • A recognizable style and vibe

You’re not guessing — you can see exactly what your wedding could feel like. On our website (Mico Entertainment), you’ll find real weddings, actual dance floors, and a clear picture of how we handle the day so that everything flows.

Factors that Affect the Price

1. Reception Only vs Full-Day Coverage

  • Reception only (dinner + dancing): lower cost

  • Ceremony + cocktail + reception: higher cost

More time = more setup, coordination, and responsibility.

Many DJs charge extra for remote or outdoor ceremonies (big gas generator) — but we include a compact, battery-powered system in our all-day packages.

2. Guest Count & Room Size

For larger weddings (150+ guests), sound enhancements like subwoofers become very important.

It’s not about volume — it’s about oomph: better sound and more energy on the dance floor.

For people who love music and want an all-out dance party, this is a really worthwhile upgrade, for any size of wedding.

3. Lighting & Atmosphere

  • Basic dance lighting is usually included

  • Uplighting enhances the room and overall feel

  • Additional effects are optional

But be mindful — not all DJ lighting is equal.

Some setups can feel clean and modern. Others (most, to be honest) can feel outdated or out-of-place at a wedding.

The best thing you can do: look at real videos and photos of actual weddings, not just gear photos (Instagram is great for this).

That’s how you’ll know what it will actually look like in your space.

4. Experience & Professionalism

This is the biggest difference, and the hardest to measure.

An experienced DJ will:

  • Read the room naturally

  • Adjust in real time

  • Coordinate smoothly with vendors

  • Keep the night flowing without awkward moments

This is what separates a rookie from a wedding professional.

5. Travel & Hotel Fees

We’re based in Calgary and regularly perform at weddings throughout the surrounding areas — including Banff, Canmore, Cochrane, Red Deer, and Edmonton.

Many companies charge additional fees for out-of-city venues, but these locations are all within our standard service area, so no travel fees apply in most cases.

What You’re Actually Paying For

(That You May not See)

People who haven't been to many weddings may assume that DJs are basically the same — so they might as well go with the cheapest option.

That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Anyone who’s been to a wedding where the DJ completely killed the vibe knows exactly how noticeable the difference is.

I saw my fair share of trainwreck DJs growing up — and honestly, that’s a big part of what motivated me to start DJing weddings myself, over 15 years ago now.

Pretty quickly, I realized there’s a lot more going on behind the scenes than people think.

A good DJ isn’t just playing songs — they’re responsible for things like:

  • Coordinating with planners, photographers, videographers, and venue staff

  • Managing microphones and sound levels so everything is clear and comfortable

  • Adapting on the fly when timelines shift or things run late

  • Reading the room and keeping the energy in a good place throughout the night

  • Choosing the right songs for 8–10 hours straight — not just a playlist, but timing

  • Creating an atmosphere where people actually feel comfortable letting loose

A good DJ will handle all this in the background. People won't even notice, they'll be too busy having fun!

Our Pricing

(Mico Entertainment)

For full transparency, here’s how our pricing is currently structured:

  • Reception Only (Essential Vibes) — $1,600

  • Ceremony + Reception (All-Day Energy) — $1,900

  • Full-Day + Enhancements (Peak Atmosphere) — $2,380

  • Subwoofer (for added dance floor energy)

Most couples keep things simple — and add one or two upgrades that make the biggest difference for their space and guest experience. Some just want to go all out, and make it as epic as possible.

I only offer things that I think actually elevate the experience and are totally worth it, depending on the couple, the vibe, and the venue.

The best part is, no matter which option you choose, your day is in good hands — it’s going to be a great time.

Is a Premium Wedding DJ Worth It?

Yes — absolutely.

A great DJ isn’t just playing random music. They’re responsible for curating the vibe for the entire day and night.

The difference shows up in things like:

  • Seamless flow — no awkward gaps, delays, or confusion between moments

  • Reading the room — adjusting naturally as the energy shifts throughout the night

  • Right song, right moment — not just good music, but knowing exactly when to play it

  • A healthy dance floor — singing, dancing, laughing, group hugs

  • Effortless coordination — everything lines up behind the scenes so the day feels smooth (you’d be surprised how often this isn’t the case)

  • Thoughtful request handling — we don’t just hit play on every guest's request; if it fits your vibe, we work it in properly

  • Calm under pressure — last-minute changes happen, no sweat, we handle it

You only get one wedding. Hiring a pro reduces your stress and makes it a vibe for everyone.

Final Thoughts

It all comes down to what kind of experience you want.

Some couples place a bigger emphasis on music, flow, and the overall feel of the night. Others are less focused on that — and that’s completely fair.

But if you do care about how the night unfolds — the transitions, the energy on the dance floor, the DJ's attitude and professionalism — it’s worth being intentional with your choice.

Take the time to look at real weddings. Watch the videos. Pay attention to how the room feels.

You should be able to see it and think, “Yeah — I want my wedding to feel like that.”

That’s how you know you’re choosing the right fit.
